Research | Karl Pieper's mother's name is listed as "Augusta Tesch" in Verona Pieper's "My Heritage"232 document and several other of her writings. Friedrich Matthies' wife is listed as "Dorothea," while her name was actually Augusta. It seems likely that Verona transposed her two great grandmother's names. | Spouses |

Misc. Notes | Landed gentry in Prussia, Michael came to America in 1853 to escape religious persecution. He used his inheritance to purchase a large tract of land in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Michael was unhappy in his new country, however. He suffered the deaths of his wives and three of his children, and was frustated at having to do hard work that had previously been done for him by servants. In early 1968 he realized that he was dying and deeded his property to his oldest son, Karl. When Michael died later that year, Karl took over raising his young sister Albertine and half sister Augusta. | Research | There are three clans of Piepers that all emigrated from the same region of Pommern to Lebanon Township within a few years of each other. Clearly they knew about each other (there are legal records), and they did not intermarry. Edna Pieper-Cherney has been attempting for years to connect the three families together in Pommern, but without success. There are just too many gaps in the records. It would be most useful to find contemporary documents -- like newspaper articles -- that mention relationships. We had hoped that Michael's Will would have been such a document, and while it does name other Piepers and Matthies, it doesn't say how they are related. |
