Misc. Notes | Sophia is completely missing from the Pieper family's oral history; Verona's documents associate Sophia's daughter Augusta with Michael's first wife, Dorothea. There certainly couldn't have been any secret about it at the time, as Sophia's brother was the executor of Michael's will. The only way she could have been so thoroughly expunged from the family history is if it was done by Karl Pieper. Perhaps he never got along with his stepmother, or held her responsible for his father's death. The big question is how closely Sophia is related to Karl's wife Friederika Matthies. | Research | Possible match: 1850 U.S. Census • Wisconsin • Dodge • Beaver Dam 2 Image 11/25 | Spouses |

Misc. Notes | Landed gentry in Prussia, Michael came to America in 1853 to escape religious persecution. He used his inheritance to purchase a large tract of land in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Michael was unhappy in his new country, however. He suffered the deaths of his wives and three of his children, and was frustated at having to do hard work that had previously been done for him by servants. In early 1968 he realized that he was dying and deeded his property to his oldest son, Karl. When Michael died later that year, Karl took over raising his young sister Albertine and half sister Augusta. | Research | There are three clans of Piepers that all emigrated from the same region of Pommern to Lebanon Township within a few years of each other. Clearly they knew about each other (there are legal records), and they did not intermarry. Edna Pieper-Cherney has been attempting for years to connect the three families together in Pommern, but without success. There are just too many gaps in the records. It would be most useful to find contemporary documents -- like newspaper articles -- that mention relationships. We had hoped that Michael's Will would have been such a document, and while it does name other Piepers and Matthies, it doesn't say how they are related. |
