Misc. Notes | Fred Matthies was born the son of sharecroppers on the von Bismark estate. He and his young bride emigrated to America with the hope of owning land here. After a very rough start, they were ultimately quite successful.
People described Fred Matthies as "a moose of a man," tall and broad; he turned heads when he walked into a room. | Research | Verona's "My Heritage" document states that he immigrated in 1843, but for various reasons the dates in "Story About Grandparents Matthies" (which are specified to the day) seem more likely. Seperate sources have confirmed that many of the other dates in the "My Heritage" document are off by several years. | Spouses |
