Misc. Notes | Known within the family as "Carl the Second." His middle name is that of his maternal grandfather, Johann Denner. Carl Johann was the owner of the Red Cow, and hence is considered the patriarch of the "Red Cow Clan." | Obituary | Pastor Carl John Gutekunst, son of Carl Gutekunst and his wife Anna, nee Denner, was born Sept. 12, 1874 at Coldwater, Mich. His parents later moved to Sebewaing, Mich., where he was confirmed in 1888. In 1889 his parents moved to Hurley, Wis.
He entered our Seminary at Springfield in 1890. Upon his graduation in 1898 his first charge was at Hay Creek, Wis., were he served two years. Then he accepted a call as missionary at large to Bayfield County, Wis. In February 1907, he was called to St. John's at New Fane, Wis., where he labored for thirty-three years. In addition to his work here he served Immanuel's at Campbellsport, Wis., which he had organized, from 1914 to 1938.
On May 3, 1900, he was united in holy wedlock with Ottilia Zank. This union was blessed with nine children, four sons and five daughters.
Although he was not in good health for the past year and a half, he nevertheless fulfilled his duties at St. John's Congregation until shortly before last Christmas.
On Wednesday, January 31, he was called to his eternal rest. Funeral services were held on February 3. Before the body was removed to St. John's Church, where it lay in state until the time of the funeral service, words of comfort were spoked in the home by Pastor Edmund Huebner. At the church the undersigned [Paster Gustav Kaniess] preached the German sermon and Pastor Walter Stroschein the English. A large number of relatives, friends, members of the congregation, and fellow-pastors were present. Pastor Gutekunst attained the age of 65 years, 4 months, and 19 days. The remains were placed to rest at Graceland Cemetery, Milwaukee, Pastor John Boerger of Racine, Wis., officiating.
The deceased is survived by his bereaved widow, fours sons, Pastor Carl Gutekunst, Jr., of Necedah, Wis., Armin Gutekunst, parochial-school teacher in Chicago, Martin and Sylvester Gutekunst, both at home, and five daughters: Margaret, wife of Pastor G. F. Bartel, Lenora, wife of Pastor Martin Schneider, Helen and Ruth Gutekunst, nurses at Milwaukee, and Dorothy Gutekunst, who teaches school in the home congregation. He also leaves five grandchildren and two sisters.
