"Rev. Carl Gutekunst Dies"
Rev. Carl H. Gutekunst, 64, died on March 26 at Parker, Ariz. Services were conducted on March 31 at Messiah Church, Parker, by Rev. Max Schaefer.

Born in 1931 in a personage at Necedah, Wis., Carl attended Concordia High School and College in Milwaukee. He graduated from the St. Louis seminary in 1956, and his first assignment was to Christ Church, Waterloo, Iowa, where he served until accepting a call in 1960 to Lutheran High School East in Harper Woods, Mich. During his years in Detroit, Pastor Gutekunst also taught at Michigan Lutheran College.

He returned to Iowa and the parish ministry, in 1966, and did graduate work at the University of Iowa. Three years later he went back to teaching ministry at Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mich., where he remnained until accept a call to a dual parish in Ohio in 1976.

In 1983, because of Mrs. Gutekunst's ill health, the couple moved to Arizona, and, in 1985, Pastor Gutekunst began serving a vacancy at Messiah Church, Parker. He became permanent called pastor of the congregation in September. During his eight-year tenure, the congregation grew in size and erected a new building, which is now home for Messiah's Child Development Center. Failing health prompted his retirement at the end of 1993, but he continued to preach where needed until October 1995.

Pastor Gutekunst will be remembered for his enthusiastic preaching, and "his magnificent and powerful singing voice," as well as his love for people. Survivors include his wife, the former Bernice Fante; sons, Carl S., John, and Paul; daughter Elizabeth; grandsons, Carl and Daniel; mother, Verona Gutekunst; and sister, Miriam Matthews.
