Misc. Notes | Known within the family as "Carl the Third." His middle name is that of his maternal grandfather, Christoph Zank. | Obituary | The Reverend Carl C. Gutekunst was born on 30 June 1906 in Washburn, Wisconsin to the Reverend Carl J. Gutekunst and his wife Ottilia (nee Zank) Gutekunst. The Lord received young Carl into His kingdom through Holy Baptism on 5 August 1906 in Washburn, Wisconsin. Pastor Gutekunst confirmed his faith in the Triune God on 28 March 1920 at St. John Lutheran Church in New Fane, Wisconsin.
Pastor Gutekunst received his education at Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduating in 1927. He then matriculated at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, graduating from there in 1930. He was ordained into the Holy Ministry by his father at St. John, New Fane, Wisconsin on 28 September 1930.
He subsequently served parishes in: Necedah and New Miner, Wisconsin; Caroline, Wisconsin; Storm Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Iowa before retiring to Seward on 1 July 1971. He served the Church at large in the following capacities: did missionary work among the Indians and taught at the Federal Indian School at Tomah, Wisconsin; served as Chaplain at the Reformatory in Animosa, Iowa; and served as a Circuit Counselor in the Iowa East District.
Pastor Gutekunst was united in marriage to Verona M. Pieper on 18 September 1930 in New Fane, Wisconsin. This union was blessed with two children, the Reverend Carl H. Gutekunst and Miriam Matthews. Pastor Gutekunst passed away on 13 November 1990 at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 13 days.
Pastor Gutekunst was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters and 1 great grandchild [Jacob Matthews]. He is survived by his wife, Verona M. Gutekunst of Seward; his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Carl H. and Bernice Gutekunst of Parker, Arizona; his daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Larry Matthews of Seward; his brother and sister-in-law, Martin and Lois Gutekunst of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; his brother and sister-in-law, S.W. and Lydia Gutekunst of Fox Lake, Wisconsin; his sister, Dorothy Pokel of Collinsville, Illinois; his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Emanuel Manteuffel of Rock Island, Illinois; his granddaughter Elizabeth Gutekunst; his grandsons, Carl S., John, and Paul Gutekunst; Michael, David, and Steven Matthews; 2 great grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends. |
